My very first glimpse of Holland’s famous flower fields is through the airplane window enroute to Amsterdam – a colourful patchwork quilt covering the Dutch countryside. My next view is an up-close and personal bicycle ride through the eye-popping, sweet-smelling blankets of blooms. Holland’s breath-taking flower fields ripple in ribbons of candy-coloured stems. I get a whiff of something wonderful and there’s another fragrant field of flowers just around the bend. The tons of tulips and millions of bicycles are iconic images of the Netherlands, so the idea of exploring these beautiful blooms “the Dutch way” just makes sense. But I’m not cycling in wooden shoes!
