Air Transat stands out internationally for its environmental performance

Air Transat once again ranks as the most climate-efficient airline in North America, stands as the only North American airline in the top-10 of the newly-released atmosfair's global ranking

MONTREAL, Nov. 12, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Thanks in large part to one of the industry's most stringent fuel management programs, Air Transat once again ranks as the most climate-efficient airline in North America, based on the comprehensive methodology developed by German NGO atmosfair. Air Transat is the only North American carrier to appear in atmosfair's global top-10 of 2014. Out of 125 international airlines, Air Transat also ranks fourth in the world in the long-haul category, and seventh on the global scorecard. The announcement came in advance of the upcoming 20th UN Climate Change Conference which will take place in Lima, Peru, in December.

"We are pleased with the results of such a comprehensive, reliable, independent study, and we are proud to be among the top performing airlines in the world. This is a tribute to the vision, work and commitment of our teams, which have all taken to the task of making our company an environmental leader," said Jean-François Lemay, General Manager of Air Transat.

For a fourth consecutive year, atmosfair (www.atmosfair.de), established in 2004 by the Forum anders reisen and Germanwatch, evaluated and ranked airlines based on their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The so-called atmosfair Airline Index allows travellers to select an airline based on its carbon footprint. The best companies are those which strive to reduce fuel consumption, and thus GHG emissions.

Stringent management of fuel consumption, adjustments to operations and investments in technology allow for measurable reductions of aircraft GHG emissions. Since 2003, Air Transat has developed, implemented and constantly improved a comprehensive fuel management program which it estimates is responsible for a 5% reduction in fuel consumption, and which is acknowledged as one of the best in the industry. Also, Air Transat was among the first airlines in Canada to disclose its GHG emissions, starting in 2007. In 2013, Air Transat emissions amounted to 7.67 kg per passenger per 100 km.
